Slater Bradley

Overview

Born in 1975 in San Francisco, California
Lives and works in Berlin, Germany

Slater Bradley is a conceptual and cross-disciplinary artist, who works with a wide variety of media, including photography, drawing, painting, neon and video. Bradley began exhibiting internationally at the age of 22, and in 2005, at the age of 30, Bradley became the youngest male artist to present a solo show at The Guggenheim. His breakthrough was partly initiated by the introduction of the concept of “The Doppelganger” as a central theme of his early work as well as his use of mass-mediated youth culture and icons alongside mythical and spiritual themes.

In 2013, Slater Bradley left New York City and travelled to Berlin, where he began to re-invent himself through rigorous spiritual introspection. This resulted in bringing forth the spiritual dimension in his work. Ancient cosmology and astrological themes plays a significant role in Bradley’s current work, such as the Shield series, which consists of hundreds of thousands of paint-pen strokes that create both subtle graduations and patterns. The experience of the works, as well as the process behind, calls upon hypnotic or even meditative concentration, and reminds the viewer of both organic tissue and radiant halos of cosmic dust.

In Bradley’s most recent installation works, the collective spiritual experience and sacred sites are explored through transcultural cosmology, philosophy, and mythology. His work includes several recurring forms and figures, such as the pentagram as a symbol of Venus and divine femininity, crystal stones and the oculus, the portal to the divine, as well as an ancient color palette of deep blue and gold, which throughout history has been connected to transcendence and the divine across belief systems.

His work is represented in several museum collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Whitney Museum, New York, and the Zabludowicz Collection, London.
