Eva Koch

Overview

Born 1953 in Frederiksberg, Denmark.
Lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Eva Koch is a sculptor, educated at the Royal Danish Academy 1985 – 1992 and the Facultad de Bellas Artes 1989 – 1990 in Barcelona. In Spain, Eva Koch started incorporating video and sculpture and created several multimedia sculptural works. Today, the work of Eva Koch continues to manifest itself within a field of sculpture, video installation and sound. Her work is often site-specific and interactive. In scale, Eva Koch’s sculptures relate to our own physical presence, most notably in her EARTH SCULPTURE near the city of Esbjerg in Denmark, which was created out of 800,000 cubic meters of earth, a clear landmark in the landscape.

A recurrent theme in Eva Koch’s video works is the anonymous individual seen from a collective viewpoint. VILLAR, Koch’s main video installation, has an almost documentary-like feel: the characters are real people and also very good storytellers. Through the use of personal stories, both about her own and other people’s life, Koch seeks to show that the universal and the personal are not opposed spheres but, on the contrary, quite interconnected and that truth has many aspects.

In 2003, Koch received the Eckersberg Medal and in 2011, the Thorvaldsen Medal. Eva Koch’s work is represented in several Danish as well as international collections, such as SMK – Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen; CGAC, Santiago de Compostella, Spain; 21C Museum Foundation, United States; Göteborg Museum of Art, Sweden.
